Centrifuges are used in many different applications throughout the health and sciences fields. Use cases can be found in most laboratory settings including analytical and physical chemistry, biochemistry and cellular genomics, diagnostic medicine, industry, environmental, water quality, and field research. Centrifuges utilize centripetal force to separate components of a heterogenous liquid into layers by density. Each centrifuge achieves the necessary force by spinning a rotor with arms containing tubes (or other liquid containing matrix) around a central point.

There are two main types of rotors, fixed angle and swing-out or horizontal rotors.  Fixed angle rotors will, as the name implies, keep the tubes fixed at a certain angle. Most often the angle will be fixed at either 45o or 0o-9o (also known as vertical or near-vertical rotors), but special rotors can be fixed at 30o for certain applications. Fixed angle rotors are most advantageous when a focalized pellet is needed, and the shortest run time is desired. Vertical rotors will have the shortest pathlength, resulting in the highest resolution, and are particularly useful for gradient density cushion separations in virology and isopycnic separations in genomics.

The second type of rotor, swing-out (horizontal) rotors have movable arms or buckets that can allow tubes and plates to swing-out to 90o and allow for a less forceful centrifugation. These are used for higher throughput of specimens, when centrifuging culture plates, during gradient centrifugation, and when pellets are needed in the middle of the bottom of the tube.

At Boekel Scientific, we understand that the many different applications require many different specifications for their centrifuges. For this reason, we offer many different models, starting with our hand-crank centrifuge and mobile phlebotomy 642M centrifuge up to our DASH Coag Stat centrifuge and SERO 12 blood bank centrifuge.   We understand your equipment is vital in ensuring your lab runs efficiently. We design our products to aid in creating accurate, repeatable results. We've worked with scientists since 1868 and look forward to helping your team complete their research.
