Laboratory Centrifuge Uses

A centrifuge separates components of a heterogenous liquid by utilizing centripetal force. A rotor with arms containing tubes achieves the necessary force for each application by spinning around a central point. The result is a process that separates dissolved particles in a solution based on their density, size, shape and viscosity.

Centrifuges have several applications throughout the science and health industries. Laboratory settings — including field research, water quality, environmental, physical and analytical chemistry, cellular genomics and biochemistry — present various use cases for centrifuges. You can use a centrifuge to analyze urine, DNA, blood and other samples.

Types of Centrifuge Rotors

Two main types of rotors exist: horizontal and fixed angle. Horizontal rotors (also known as swing-out rotors) have movable buckets that allow plates and tubes to swing to 90° to allow less forceful centrifugation. These rotors are necessary for culture plates, gradient centrifugation, higher throughput specimens and applications requiring pellets in the middle of the bottom of the tube.

Fixed-angle rotors keep the tubes at a specific angle. Typically, most applications require a 45° or 0°-9° (vertical or near-vertical) angle. You can fix some rotors at 30° for certain applications. These rotors are most beneficial when you need a focalized pellet and want a shorter run time. Vertical rotors provide the highest resolution due to the short path length. One task that benefits from these rotors includes gradient density cushion separations in isopycnic centrifugation and virology.
